Carving Slate with John Thompson (11 years and up)
Slate is a beautiful stone to carve, being very fine grained and dense, make it a stunning material for relief carving. The chiseled line shows up in sharp contrast against the deep blue-grey riven finish. Learning how to carve stone from John Thompson, kids will create three-dimensional relief sculptures over this five week class. Working and thinking in relief activates whole new parts of the brain, and playing with tools and stone is just fun!
This class will take advantage of the expertise of John and the fine qualities of the slate he has acquired from used pool tables.
At the ZACC, we believe something truly special happens when students of different ages create together. In our experience, kids often thrive in mixed-age settings—where younger students look up to older peers, and older kids step into natural mentorship roles. With small class sizes and dedicated ZACC instructors, each class is tailored to the unique group of students enrolled. Whether your child is just starting out or already a creative teen or tween, we’re committed to providing a safe, inspiring environment for all students to grow and explore their creativity.
