Since 2011, the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) has become a catalyst of inclusiveness in the performing arts community by introducing sensory-friendly performances. This initiative sprang from a heartfelt request by a local parent who requested an adapted production for those on the autism spectrum. Today, MCT proudly presents its 16th sensory-friendly show, with this winter’s staging of “Annie.”

By making thoughtful modifications, these productions are designed to create a comfortable viewing experience for individuals with sensory processing disorders. MCT takes extensive measures to reduce overwhelming stimuli, including adjusting lighting to softer hues, moderating sound levels to avoid sharp noises, and minimizing sudden movements on stage. These changes help to alleviate potential sensory overload, allowing audience members to fully engage with the performance without discomfort.
One unique aspect of sensory-friendly shows is the opportunity for attendees to become acquainted with characters that may otherwise seem unfamiliar or intimidating. Whether it’s puppets, clowns, or fantastical witches, MCT ensures that patrons can familiarize themselves with these figures before the show begins. This preparation sets a welcoming stage for families and caretakers, fostering an environment where everyone feels included and secure.
The aim of these performances extends beyond mere enjoyment; it seeks to make theatre an accessible haven for individuals with sensory sensitivities. Through the creation of a relaxed atmosphere, MCT encourages participation in community events without the weight of judgment or fear—allowing families to come together and experience the joy of live theatre in a supportive setting.
By prioritizing the needs of families with sensory processing challenges, MCT not only enhances the theatrical experience but also advocates for the broader acceptance of diverse audiences in the arts.
As we look forward to this winter’s production of “Annie,” we celebrate the ongoing commitment of Missoula Children’s Theatre to foster inclusivity and ensure that everyone can enjoy the magic of live performances.
